The Lettered Streets Neighborhood Association invites the community to join us for a presentation by historian Carole Teshima and other members of Nikkei Northwest who will tell us about the experience of Japanese Americans in our community before World War II. The event is free and all are welcome. Space is limited so please register here.

More than 120,000 Japanese and Japanese American families were incarcerated in the United States during WWII. Persons of Japanese ancestry were incarcerated in 10 concentration camps and 29 prison locations. Carole Teshima will give an overview of the established Bellingham families, many of them Lettered Streets residents, who were forcibly removed from their homes and businesses, gave up everything, and never returned. A member of one of those families became Bellingham's only Congressional Medal of Honor.

Presenter Fumio Otsu was born in the Tule Lake Concentration Camp where Japanese families from Bellingham were also imprisoned. Other members of Nikkei Northwest will be present to add to the discussion and answer questions about their own families' unique experiences.

Carole Teshima, a longtime Whatcom County resident, began researching and writing about Bellingham's Japanese and Japanese American community while attending the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians Confinement Redress Hearing in Seattle in 1981. She is one of the founding members of Nikkei Northwest, whose mission is to educate members and others about the Japanese American experience. She recently retired from WWU.
